Corrections
When a figure or a rule on this site turns out to be wrong, we fix it and list it here with the date. Found one? Write to hello@paycheckplain.com.
| Date | Page | What was wrong, and the fix |
|---|---|---|
| Sep 28, 2026 | Iowa bonus tax page | Said Iowa withholds a flat 6% on bonuses without noting that the rule predates the 3.8% income tax rate. The 6% rule is still in the Iowa Administrative Code; the page now says so and that the excess comes back when you file. |
| Sep 27, 2026 | Illinois paycheck calculator | The IL-W-4 hint said dependents go on Line 2. They go on Line 1 (basic allowances); Line 2 is for additional allowances. |
| Sep 27, 2026 | State bonus tax pages | The "Updated" date showed the site-wide data date rather than the day each state's bonus rule was checked. Each page now shows its own date. |
What counts as a correction
A correction is any change to a published figure, rule or explanation that was wrong when we published it: a rate, a wage limit, a form instruction, a date, or wording that described a rule inaccurately. Each entry says what was wrong and what the page says now.
Routine updates are not corrections. New tax years, new rates announced by the IRS or a state, and new pages are listed on payroll tax updates instead.
How we check a reported error
- We find the official source for the rule: the IRS or Social Security publication, or the state's own withholding guide, law or rule.
- We work the reported example by hand from that source and compare it with the calculator.
- If the calculator or the page is wrong, we fix it, add a test so the same mistake can't come back, and list it here with the date.
- If the source itself is unclear, the page says so and explains which reading we use.
