How it's worked out

Yearly pay = hourly rate × (regular hours + 1.5 × overtime hours) × paid weeks a year. Monthly pay is that divided by 12, every-two-weeks pay divided by 26, and twice-a-month pay divided by 24. With overtime, the "hourly" line shows your average pay per hour worked, which is higher than your base rate.

Common hourly rates as yearly pay

Why 2,080 hours?

A full-time year is usually counted as 40 hours a week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. Paid vacation, paid holidays and paid sick days are still paid weeks, so they stay in the count. If you take time off without pay, lower "Paid weeks a year" — two unpaid weeks means 50 paid weeks.

Most federal government employees are paid on a different count. By law (5 U.S.C. 5504(b)), their hourly rate is yearly pay divided by 2,087 hours, the average number of work hours in a calendar year. That makes the hourly rate a little lower: $50,000 is $24.04 an hour over 2,080 hours but $23.96 over 2,087.

26 or 27 paychecks

A year has 52 weeks and one or two extra days, so if you're paid every two weeks, some years have 27 paydays instead of 26. The table above splits your yearly pay across 26 paychecks. If your employer pays a fixed amount per paycheck, a 27-paycheck year pays you a little more that year; if it divides your salary by the paychecks in the year, each paycheck is a little smaller.

Overtime

Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, a worker who isn't exempt must get at least 1.5 times the regular rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek. Each workweek stands alone: 30 hours one week and 50 the next still earns 10 hours of overtime, because hours can't be averaged over two weeks. Some salaried employees are exempt from overtime; the Department of Labor explains the tests. Some states add their own overtime rules — your state's hourly paycheck page says which apply.

Before tax and after tax

These figures are gross pay — what you earn before anything is taken out. Pick a state above to see roughly what you keep after federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare and that state's taxes, or use a state's paycheck calculator for the full breakdown with your own W-4.
