How monthly pay works
A yearly salary is divided across 12 paychecks. There is one regular payday in each calendar month. Monthly pay produces the fewest regular checks and the largest amount per check. Federal and state withholding are worked out for this pay period, then the result also shows the yearly totals.
Pay frequency comparison
The same $55,000 yearly salary has the following gross pay before tax and deductions. Changing frequency changes the size and timing of each check, not the salary.
| Frequency | Checks a year | Gross per check |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly | 52 | $1,057.69 |
| Biweekly | 26 | $2,115.38 |
| Semi-monthly | 24 | $2,291.67 |
| Monthly | 12 | $4,583.33 |
Why deductions can look different
Percentage deductions, such as a 401(k) contribution, follow the size of the check. Fixed benefits entered per paycheck are taken from every check, so confirm whether your employer divides the annual cost across 12 pay periods. Extra W-4 withholding is also a per-paycheck amount. Small yearly differences can appear because payroll tables and some state rules round each pay period.
