How the Philadelphia tax works
Philadelphia taxes two groups: residents, on all the pay they earn wherever they work (3.735%), and non-residents, on pay for work done in the city (3.425%). These rates apply from July 1, 2026; before that they were 3.74% and 3.43%.
The wage tax is figured on your pay before 401(k) contributions, so saving for retirement doesn't lower it; pre-tax health insurance and other cafeteria-plan benefits do. It is entered in the calculator's local earned income tax field — change it there if you're a non-resident.
Philadelphia take-home pay: with and without the city tax
Single filer paid every two weeks with a standard W-4 and no 401(k) or benefits. "No local tax" is the same pay without any city or other local income tax.
