How the Columbus tax works
Ohio cities tax wages where the work is done. If you work in Columbus, your employer withholds 2.5% of your qualifying wages — the same pay Medicare tax is figured on. That means a pre-tax 401(k) doesn't lower the city tax, while pre-tax health insurance and other cafeteria-plan benefits do.
If you live in Columbus but work in another city, your home city may tax the part that the work city's tax doesn't cover, after a credit for what you paid there. Each city sets its own credit rules.
School district income tax is separate: it depends on where you live, not where you work. If your district has one, enter its rate in the calculator's school district field.
