What comes out of a Alaska paycheck
- Federal income tax withholding — worked out from your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS tables for 2026.
- Social Security — 6.2% of your pay, up to $184,500 of pay in 2026. Above that, it stops for the rest of the year.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all your pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 in the year.
Alaska has no personal state income tax. It is one of the few states where employees pay into unemployment insurance: 0.5% of your taxable wages in 2026, on the first $54,200 you earn in the year. After that it stops for the rest of the year.
Taxable wages for this purpose leave out what you put into an employer retirement plan such as a 401(k) and most pre-tax cafeteria-plan benefits such as health insurance and an HSA, so the calculator works it out on your pay after those.
What's different about Alaska
Daily overtime
Alaska has daily overtime: time-and-a-half for hours over 8 in a day as well as over 40 in a week. Employers with fewer than 4 employees are exempt. To see it in the calculator, add up your weekly overtime hours without counting any hour twice and enter them in "Overtime hours a week".
A rising minimum wage and paid sick leave
Voters approved Ballot Measure 1 in 2024. It raised the minimum wage to $14.00 on July 1, 2026, with $15.00 due on July 1, 2027, and created paid sick leave that builds up at one hour for every 30 hours worked. Tips can't count toward the minimum wage.
You choose monthly or twice-monthly pay
Unless you and your employer agree to monthly pay in a yearly contract, Alaska law says pay periods are monthly or twice a month, at the employee's choice.
Your last paycheck
If you are let go, your final pay is due within 3 working days. If you quit, it's due on the next regular payday that is at least three days after your employer got your notice.
Unpaid wages
A claim for unpaid wages or overtime must be started within 2 years.
If you work more than one job
Each employer takes the unemployment contribution on the first $54,200 it pays you, so with two jobs you may pay it on more than $54,200 in total. This calculator shows one job.
Why your paycheck might differ from this
- Your W-4. Credits for children (Step 3), a checked Step 2 box, or extra withholding (Step 4c) change the federal amount a lot. Open "Tips, 401(k), health insurance and W-4 details" above to enter them.
- Benefits taken before tax. Health insurance through work usually lowers income tax and Social Security and Medicare. A traditional 401(k) lowers income tax only.
- Rounding. Payroll software may round each step, so a few cents of difference is normal.
Tips and overtime in 2026
New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
