What comes out of a Maine paycheck

A Maine paycheck usually has two state lines:

Here is how the income tax is worked out. Your employer multiplies this paycheck by the number of paydays in the year. It takes off $5,300 for each allowance on your W-4ME. Then it takes off a standard deduction: $12,450 on the single rate or $27,750 on the married rate. The tax on what is left comes from the rate schedule, and the yearly amount is split across your paydays and rounded to the nearest dollar. Open "How the Maine income tax was worked out" under the result to see each step.

What's different about Maine

The standard deduction fades out at higher pay

On the single rate, the full $12,450 applies while your yearly pay is $102,250 or less. Above that it shrinks step by step and is gone at $177,250. On the married rate, the full $27,750 applies up to $204,550 and is gone at $354,550. So a raise in that range can lift your Maine tax by more than the rate on the extra dollars alone.

Your W-4ME sets your withholding

Maine has its own form, the W-4ME. Line 3 picks the rate: "Single or Head of Household", "Married", or "Married, but withholding at higher single rate". Heads of household and the last choice both use the single rate. Line 4 is your number of allowances — one for yourself, one for your spouse, one for head of household, plus children and dependents. Line 5 lets you ask for an extra amount each payday. If you never give your employer a valid W-4ME, it withholds as if you were single with no allowances.

Pre-tax benefits lower your Maine tax

Maine withholding starts from the same wages as federal withholding, so a traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health premiums lower your Maine tax too. Paid Family and Medical Leave is different: it counts all your pay up to the Social Security wage base, including what goes into your 401(k).

Paid Family and Medical Leave

The contribution is 1% of wages at employers with 15 or more employees, and 0.5% at smaller ones. Either way, your employer can take up to 0.5% of your wages from your pay. We show that full amount. Some employers pay part or all of it for you.

Paydays and your last paycheck

Maine employers must pay you at regular intervals of no more than 16 days, on a set day you are told about. Each payday must cover wages earned up to 8 days before it. When you leave a job, you must be paid in full by the next regular payday.

Wage complaints

If you weren't paid what you're owed, you can file a complaint with the Wage and Hour Division of the Maine Department of Labor. This calculator shows no city or county income tax line for Maine.

Why your paycheck might differ from this

Tips and overtime in 2026

New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).

These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
