What comes out of a New York paycheck
- Federal income tax withholding — worked out from your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS tables for 2026.
- Social Security — 6.2% of your pay, up to $184,500 of pay in 2026. Above that, it stops for the rest of the year.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all your pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 in the year.
A New York paycheck can have up to four state and local lines:
- New York State income tax. Your employer uses the Tax Department's 2026 tables (publication NYS-50-T-NYS). It takes your pay after a traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health insurance, subtracts a deduction for your pay period and filing status plus $1,000 a year for each IT-2104 allowance, and looks the rest up in a table. The first dollars are taxed at 3.9%, and the rate on each extra dollar changes as pay rises. Very high pay (from $1,077,550 a year after the deduction if single) is taxed at a flat top rate instead: 10.45%, 11.1%, 11.7%.
- New York City or Yonkers tax, only if you live there. New York City has its own table, from 2.05% to 4.25%. Yonkers residents pay 16.75% of their New York State tax.
- Disability benefits (SDI): 0.5% of your wages, but no more than $0.60 a week — $31.20 a year at most.
- Paid Family Leave: 0.432% of your wages each paycheck, up to $411.91 for the year.

What's different about New York
Form IT-2104, not just your W-4
New York has its own withholding form, the IT-2104. You tick "Single or Head of household" or "Married" (or "Married, but withhold at higher single rate", which is taxed like single), and you claim allowances on two lines: line 1 for New York State and Yonkers, line 2 for New York City. Each allowance lowers the pay your employer taxes by $1,000 a year. If you gave your employer a federal W-4 from 2020 or later but no IT-2104, it may use zero allowances. Married employees start with a slightly larger deduction: $7,950 a year instead of $7,400.
Living in New York City
New York City residents — the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island — have city tax withheld too. It uses its own tables (NYS-50-T-NYC), with a deduction of $5,000 a year if single or $5,500 if married, plus $1,000 for each allowance on IT-2104 line 2. The calculator only adds it when you choose "New York City resident" above.
Living in Yonkers
If you live in Yonkers, your employer withholds 16.75% of your New York State tax as Yonkers resident tax. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a separate nonresident earnings tax, which this calculator does not include.
Disability and Paid Family Leave
Employers may take up to 0.5% of your pay for disability benefits, capped at $0.60 a week — so the cap for a paycheck depends on how many weeks it covers. Employers are allowed, but not required, to collect it; some pay it themselves. Paid Family Leave is 0.432% of your wages until you've paid $411.91 for the year, and it comes out of after-tax pay.
Bonuses
If a bonus is paid separately from your regular pay, your employer can withhold a flat 11.7% for New York State, 4.25% for New York City and 1.95975% for Yonkers residents, or add it to your regular pay and use the tables.
Paydays and your last paycheck
Manual workers must be paid weekly, no later than seven days after the end of the week they worked (some large employers get approval to pay twice a month). Clerical and other workers must be paid at least twice a month, on regular paydays set in advance. When you leave, your final wages are due by the regular payday for the pay period in which your job ended, and by mail if you ask. The Department of Labor's Division of Labor Standards takes claims for unpaid wages.
Why your paycheck might differ from this
- Your W-4. Credits for children (Step 3), a checked Step 2 box, or extra withholding (Step 4c) change the federal amount a lot. Open "Tips, 401(k), health insurance and W-4 details" above to enter them.
- Benefits taken before tax. Health insurance through work usually lowers income tax and Social Security and Medicare. A traditional 401(k) lowers income tax only.
- Rounding. Payroll software may round each step, so a few cents of difference is normal.
Tips and overtime in 2026
New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
