What comes out of a North Carolina paycheck

North Carolina has a flat 3.99% income tax for 2026. Employers withhold it using the Department of Revenue's NC-30 method:

  1. Your pay subject to income tax — after a traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health insurance, as for federal tax — is turned into a yearly amount.
  2. The N.C. standard deduction is subtracted: $12,750 if you're single, married or a surviving spouse, or $19,125 for head of household. Each NC-4 allowance takes off another $2,500.
  3. The rest is multiplied by 4.09% — the 3.99% rate plus 0.1% that NC-30 adds for withholding — divided by your number of paychecks and rounded to the nearest whole dollar.

Because the withholding rate is a little higher than the tax rate, withholding tends to run slightly above the tax you'll owe. If you never gave your employer an NC-4, it must withhold as if you're single with no allowances. Unemployment taxes are not deducted from employees' wages.

What's different about North Carolina

Married couples: each paycheck uses the single deduction

For withholding, NC-30 gives married employees the same $12,750 standard deduction as single employees — each spouse's employer withholds on its own. Only head of household gets the larger $19,125. That's why we ask for your NC-4 status separately; by default we match it to your federal W-4, treating "married filing jointly" as the single/married line.

Allowances

The NC-4 lets you claim one allowance for each $2,500 your N.C. itemized deductions are expected to exceed the standard deduction, and more for some tax credits. Each allowance lowers your N.C. withholding by about $102 a year.

Paydays and your last paycheck

North Carolina employers must pay all wages on the regular payday, and pay periods can be daily, weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly. When you leave, your final wages are due on or before the next regular payday — by trackable mail if you ask in writing.

Rates keep falling

North Carolina's rate dropped from 4.25% in 2025 to 3.99% in 2026, and state law allows further cuts from 2027 if revenue targets are met. We update the calculator when the Department of Revenue publishes new tables.

Moving to North Carolina

If you move from a state with no income tax, expect roughly 4.09% of your pay above the standard deduction to be withheld for North Carolina — the "North Carolina income tax" line above shows exactly how much.

Why your paycheck might differ from this

Tips and overtime in 2026

New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).

These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
