Salary to paycheck

Your salary is divided by the number of paychecks in the year: 52 weekly, 26 every two weeks, 24 twice a month, or 12 monthly. Every-two-weeks pay gives 26 checks, so two months a year have three paydays.

A traditional 401(k) lowers the pay federal income tax is worked out on, but not Social Security or Medicare. A Roth 401(k) comes out after tax — enter it as an after-tax deduction.

Salaried in Missouri

On a salary, Missouri works out your tax for the whole year — your paycheck times your number of paychecks, less the standard deduction — then splits it across your paychecks, rounded to the dollar. A traditional 401(k) lowers it; a Roth 401(k) does not. If you live or work in St. Louis or Kansas City, the 1% city earnings tax comes out as well.

What comes out of a Missouri paycheck

Missouri has a graduated income tax that tops out at 4.7% for 2026. Employers can work out withholding with the Department of Revenue's yearly formula:

  1. Start with your pay subject to income tax — after a traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health insurance, the same as for federal tax — and multiply it by your number of paychecks in a year.
  2. Subtract the Missouri standard deduction for your MO W-4 filing status: $16,100 if you're single, married filing separately, or married with a working spouse; $32,200 if you're married and your spouse doesn't work; $24,150 for head of household.
  3. Apply the rate table. The first $1,348 is taxed at 0%, and each next $1,348 step is taxed a bit more, from 2% up. Everything over $9,436 is taxed at 4.7%, on top of a fixed $263.
  4. Divide the year's tax by your number of paychecks and round to the nearest whole dollar.

Missouri has no employee-paid state disability or family leave deduction. Unemployment insurance is paid entirely by employers, and no part of it can be taken out of your pay.

City earnings tax. The City of St. Louis and Kansas City each charge a 1% earnings tax on people who live in the city and on people who work there. Enter the rate above if it applies to you; we work it out on your pay before a 401(k) is taken out, and after pre-tax health benefits.
