Hourly pay in Hawaii
Hawaii's minimum wage is $16.00 an hour in 2026. Employers can pay tipped workers up to $1.25 less — $14.75 an hour — but only when wages plus tips come to at least $7.00 more than the minimum wage. The minimum wage rises to $18.00 on January 1, 2028.
Overtime. Overtime is generally due after 40 hours in a workweek, at time-and-a-half.
Tips and extra hours. Tips of $20 or more in a month that you report to your employer are wages for Hawaii withholding. Overtime paid with your regular wages is taxed as one payment. TDI is a percentage of your weekly pay until it reaches $7.50 a week.
Because hours change from week to week, your withholding changes too: a week with lots of overtime is withheld as if you earned that much every week, so more comes out. It usually evens out when you file your return.
What comes out of a Hawaii paycheck
- Federal income tax withholding — worked out from your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS tables for 2026.
- Social Security — 6.2% of your pay, up to $184,500 of pay in 2026. Above that, it stops for the rest of the year.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all your pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 in the year.
A Hawaii paycheck usually has two state lines:
- Hawaii income tax. Employers follow the Department of Taxation's 2026 withholding tables. Using the annual method, your pay subject to income tax for this paycheck is turned into a yearly amount. A traditional 401(k) or pre-tax health plan that lowers your federal taxable pay lowers it here too. Then $1,144 comes off for each allowance on your Form HW-4, and an extra lump sum allowance of $4,350 comes off for everyone. The rest goes through the Single or Married table, at rates from 1.4% to 7.9%. The yearly tax is then divided by your number of paychecks, and any extra amount from line 5 of your HW-4 is added.
- TDI (temporary disability insurance). Hawaii requires employers to cover workers for time off from an injury or illness that isn't work related. Your employer can take up to half the cost from your pay, but never more than 0.5% of your weekly wages, and never more than $7.50 a week in 2026. We show that top amount; your employer may charge less or nothing.

Tips and overtime in 2026
New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
