Hourly pay in Idaho
Idaho's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and cities and counties can't set a higher one. Tipped employees can be paid a cash wage of $3.35 as long as tips bring them up to $7.25. Workers under 20 can be paid $4.25 for their first 90 days on a new job.
Overtime. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, covered employees get time-and-a-half for hours over 40 in a workweek. Each workweek stands on its own.
Breaks. Idaho law does not require breaks or meal periods; you get them only if your employer's policy gives them.
Because hours change from week to week, your withholding changes too: a week with lots of overtime is withheld as if you earned that much every week, so more comes out. It usually evens out when you file your return.
What comes out of a Idaho paycheck
- Federal income tax withholding — worked out from your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS tables for 2026.
- Social Security — 6.2% of your pay, up to $184,500 of pay in 2026. Above that, it stops for the rest of the year.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all your pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 in the year.
Idaho has a flat income tax of 5.3%. Employers work out how much to withhold with the Idaho State Tax Commission's table for the percentage method, which has one table for each pay schedule:
- Start with your pay subject to income tax this paycheck — after a traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health insurance, as for federal tax.
- Subtract your Idaho W-4 allowances. Since the table was updated in July 2026, each allowance is worth $0, so this step takes nothing off.
- Subtract the threshold for your pay schedule. Nothing is withheld on pay up to it. On the Single table it is $310 a week, $619 every two weeks, $671 twice a month or $1,342 a month. On the Married table it is $619, $1,238, $1,342 or $2,683.
- Multiply what is left by 5.3% and round to the nearest whole dollar.
- Add any extra amount you asked for on line 2 of your Form ID W-4.
Over a full year, the thresholds come to $16,100 on the Single table and $32,200 on the Married table.
Idaho has no employee-paid state payroll programs. State unemployment tax is paid by employers, not taken from your pay.
Tips and overtime in 2026
New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
