Hourly pay in Kansas

Kansas's minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Tipped employees can be paid $2.13 an hour in cash if tips bring them up to $7.25; if they don't, the employer pays the difference. The state law only covers jobs that the federal wage law does not; jobs under the federal law get the federal minimum.

Overtime. Where federal wage law applies, non-exempt employees get time-and-a-half for hours over 40 in a workweek. For jobs covered only by state law, Kansas requires time-and-a-half after 46 hours in a workweek.

Tips and overtime on your Kansas tax. Reported tips and overtime pay are part of your wages for the withholding tables.

Because hours change from week to week, your withholding changes too: a week with lots of overtime is withheld as if you earned that much every week, so more comes out. It usually evens out when you file your return.

What comes out of a Kansas paycheck

Kansas has a graduated income tax with two rates: 5.2% and 5.58%. Employers withhold it with the Kansas Department of Revenue's percentage method from its KW-100 guide:

  1. Start with your pay subject to income tax for this paycheck. A traditional 401(k) or pre-tax health plan that is left out of federal income tax wages is left out for Kansas too.
  2. Subtract your K-4 allowances. Your first allowance is worth $9,160 a year. On the Joint rate your first two are worth $18,320. Each allowance after that is worth $2,320. The yearly total is split across your paychecks — for example, one Single allowance is $352.31 every two weeks.
  3. Find what's left in the Single or Married table for your pay period. The first slice has no withholding. After that the table takes 5.2% of each dollar, and 5.58% on the top slice.
  4. Add any extra amount you asked for on line 5 of your K-4.

Employers may round Kansas withholding to the nearest whole dollar, but they don't have to. We show it to the cent. The only Kansas line in this calculator is income tax.

Tips and overtime in 2026

New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).

These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
