Salary to paycheck
Your salary is divided by the number of paychecks in the year: 52 weekly, 26 every two weeks, 24 twice a month, or 12 monthly. Every-two-weeks pay gives 26 checks, so two months a year have three paydays.
A traditional 401(k) lowers the pay federal income tax is worked out on, but not Social Security or Medicare. A Roth 401(k) comes out after tax — enter it as an after-tax deduction.
Salaried in New Jersey
On a salary, the three insurance programs together take 0.845% of your gross pay until you pass $44,800 for the year. After that, only TDI and FLI (0.42% together) continue, up to $171,100. Income tax depends on your rate table: a higher yearly salary moves more of your pay into higher slices of the table.
What comes out of a New Jersey paycheck
- Federal income tax withholding — worked out from your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS tables for 2026.
- Social Security — 6.2% of your pay, up to $184,500 of pay in 2026. Above that, it stops for the rest of the year.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all your pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 in the year.
A New Jersey paycheck usually has four state lines:
- New Jersey income tax, withheld from the Division of Taxation's rate tables (A to E). Rates on each slice of pay run from 1.5% to 11.8%.
- Unemployment and workforce funds (UI/WF/SWF): 0.425% of your wages — 0.3825% for unemployment insurance plus 0.0425% for the workforce funds. It stops once your pay for the year passes $44,800, so the most you pay in 2026 is $190.40.
- Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI): 0.19% of your wages ($1.90 per $1,000), up to $171,100 of pay — at most $325.09 for the year.
- Family Leave Insurance (FLI): 0.23% of your wages ($2.30 per $1,000), up to the same $171,100 — at most $393.53.
Here is how the income tax is worked out. Your employer takes your pay for the year, subtracts $1,000 for each allowance on your NJ-W4, and looks up the tax in your rate table. The yearly tax is split across your paychecks. Open "How the New Jersey income tax was worked out" under the result to see each step.
