Salary to paycheck
Your salary is divided by the number of paychecks in the year: 52 weekly, 26 every two weeks, 24 twice a month, or 12 monthly. Every-two-weeks pay gives 26 checks, so two months a year have three paydays.
A traditional 401(k) lowers the pay federal income tax is worked out on, but not Social Security or Medicare. A Roth 401(k) comes out after tax — enter it as an after-tax deduction.
Salaried in Rhode Island
On a salary, your employer takes your RI W-4 exemptions off each paycheck and reads the rest from the table for your pay period, at 3.75%, 4.75% and then 5.99%. A traditional 401(k) lowers the pay the table sees; a Roth 401(k) does not. TDI still counts your 401(k) money. If you earn more than $100,000, TDI stops partway through the year and your later paychecks get a little bigger.
What comes out of a Rhode Island paycheck
- Federal income tax withholding — worked out from your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS tables for 2026.
- Social Security — 6.2% of your pay, up to $184,500 of pay in 2026. Above that, it stops for the rest of the year.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all your pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 in the year.
Two Rhode Island lines come out of your paycheck: state income tax and Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI).
Rhode Island has a graduated income tax with three rates: 3.75%, 4.75% and 5.99%. Employers withhold it with the Division of Taxation's percentage method:
- Start with your pay subject to income tax for this paycheck. A traditional 401(k) or pre-tax health plan that is left out of your federal taxable wages is left out here too.
- Subtract your RI W-4 exemptions. Each one is worth $1,000 a year — $19.23 a week or $38.46 every two weeks.
- Look up what's left in the table for your pay period. There is one table for everyone, whatever your filing status. Over a year, the first $82,050 is taxed at 3.75%, pay up to $186,450 at 4.75%, and anything above that at 5.99%.
- Add any extra amount you asked for on line 2 of your RI W-4.
The Division's own example: a weekly paycheck of $2,195 with one exemption. Take off $19.23 to get $2,175.77. The first $1,578 is taxed at 3.75% ($59.18) and the other $597.77 at 4.75% ($28.39), so $87.57 is withheld.
TDI is paid only by workers. In 2026 it is 1.1% of your pay, up to $100,000 of pay for the year, so it stops at $1,100. Temporary Caregiver Insurance, for bonding with a new child or caring for a seriously ill family member, is part of TDI — there's no separate charge.
