What comes out of an Idaho paycheck

Idaho has a flat income tax of 5.3%. Employers work out how much to withhold with the Idaho State Tax Commission's table for the percentage method, which has one table for each pay schedule:

  1. Start with your pay subject to income tax this paycheck - after a traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health insurance, as for federal tax.
  2. Subtract your Idaho W-4 allowances. Since the table was updated in July 2026, each allowance is worth $0, so this step takes nothing off.
  3. Subtract the threshold for your pay schedule. Nothing is withheld on pay up to it. On the Single table it is $310 a week, $619 every two weeks, $671 twice a month or $1,342 a month. On the Married table it is $619, $1,238, $1,342 or $2,683.
  4. Multiply what is left by 5.3% and round to the nearest whole dollar.
  5. Add any extra amount you asked for on line 2 of your Form ID W-4.

Over a full year, the thresholds come to $16,100 on the Single table and $32,200 on the Married table.

Idaho has no employee-paid state payroll programs. State unemployment tax is paid by employers, not taken from your pay.

What's different about Idaho

Allowances are worth nothing right now

Form ID W-4 asks for allowances based on the children in your home, because they used to stand for the Idaho child tax credit. That credit has ended under state law. When the Tax Commission updated its 2026 withholding tables in July, it set the allowance amount to $0. Employers use the new tables from then on; they don't go back and redo earlier paychecks. So the number of allowances on your form does not change your withholding.

Your Form ID W-4 status

Form ID W-4 has three boxes: A for single (this includes head of household), B for married, and C for married but withheld at the Single rate. The Married table has a higher threshold, so less is withheld. Box C uses the Single table even though you are married. Line 2 lets you ask for an extra dollar amount each paycheck. Pick your box above; if you leave it on "match", we use your federal filing status.

Bonuses

If your employer pays a bonus or commission on its own check, it can withhold a flat 5.3% of it, or add it to your regular pay and use the table.

Paydays and your last paycheck

Your employer must pay you at least once each calendar month on regular paydays set in advance. The pay period can end no more than 15 days before payday. When you leave a job for any reason, you must be paid all wages due by the next regular payday or within 10 days, whichever comes first, not counting weekends and holidays. If you ask in writing, you must be paid within 48 hours of the request, not counting weekends and holidays.

Unpaid wages

You can file a wage claim with the Idaho Department of Labor or go to court. Claims must be filed within 2 years, or within 12 months if you were paid for the period and say you are owed more. In court, you can get 3 times the unpaid wages, plus costs and attorney's fees.

What changed for 2026

Idaho's rate stays at 5.3% for 2026. In July the withholding tables were updated because the Idaho child tax credit ended.

Why your paycheck might differ from this

Tips and overtime in 2026

New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).

These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
