Hourly pay in New York
New York's minimum wage for 2026 is $17.00 an hour in New York City, Long Island and Westchester and $16.00 in the rest of the state. The hourly calculator uses $16.00.
Tipped workers. Food service workers can be paid a cash wage of $11.35 downstate or $10.70 elsewhere, and service employees $14.15 or $13.30, if tips bring them up to the minimum wage. Tip credits are allowed in hospitality; since the end of 2020 they are not allowed in most other industries, and never in building service.
Overtime. Time-and-a-half for hours over 40 in a payroll week (over 44 for live-in workers). Tipped workers' overtime is time-and-a-half the minimum wage, less the tip credit.
Paydays. Manual workers must be paid every week, within seven days after the week ends.
Every hour is taxed. More hours mean a higher New York tax, disability and Paid Family Leave line, until disability reaches $0.60 a week.
Because hours change from week to week, your withholding changes too: a week with lots of overtime is withheld as if you earned that much every week, so more comes out. It usually evens out when you file your return.
What comes out of a New York paycheck
- Federal income tax withholding — worked out from your pay and your Form W-4, using the IRS tables for 2026.
- Social Security — 6.2% of your pay, up to $184,500 of pay in 2026. Above that, it stops for the rest of the year.
- Medicare — 1.45% of all your pay, plus 0.9% on pay above $200,000 in the year.
A New York paycheck can have up to four state and local lines:
- New York State income tax. Your employer uses the Tax Department's 2026 tables (publication NYS-50-T-NYS). It takes your pay after a traditional 401(k) and pre-tax health insurance, subtracts a deduction for your pay period and filing status plus $1,000 a year for each IT-2104 allowance, and looks the rest up in a table. The first dollars are taxed at 3.9%, and the rate on each extra dollar changes as pay rises. Very high pay (from $1,077,550 a year after the deduction if single) is taxed at a flat top rate instead: 10.45%, 11.1%, 11.7%.
- New York City or Yonkers tax, only if you live there. New York City has its own table, from 2.05% to 4.25%. Yonkers residents pay 16.75% of their New York State tax.
- Disability benefits (SDI): 0.5% of your wages, but no more than $0.60 a week — $31.20 a year at most.
- Paid Family Leave: 0.432% of your wages each paycheck, up to $411.91 for the year.

Tips and overtime in 2026
New federal deductions apply for 2025 through 2028: up to $25,000 for qualified tips, and up to $12,500 ($25,000 for joint filers) for the extra "half" of time-and-a-half overtime. Both phase out above $150,000 of income ($300,000 joint).
These are deductions on your tax return. Your employer still takes Social Security and Medicare out of tips and overtime, and still withholds income tax unless you tell it otherwise. If you expect to claim them, you can put the expected amount in Step 4(b) of your W-4 (and in the Step 4(b) box above) so less income tax is withheld during the year.
